Mayor’s Charity 2018/19
Introducing Derrick Griffin, the Mayor of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield
Derrick Griffin represents Walmley and Minworth ward on the Town Council, whilst holding office as Mayor since May 2018. Between 2016 and 2018 he represented Newhall Ward on the Town Council.
Derrick moved from Walsall to Walmley with his late wife Jeanette in 1978. His two daughters, Sharon & Suzanne, attended Walmey Infant and Junior Schools and completed their education at John Wilmott. His two granddaughters attended the Deanery for a year before moving to Leicestershire.
Derrick’s career took him overseas including serving for six years in the Royal Military Police in Kenya during the Emergency.
Derrick is an active volunteer within his community having served for a number of years as the Chairman of the Parent Teachers Association at Walmley School. For the last 24 years he has been the Secretary and Treasurer to the Birmingham Branch of the Royal British Legion and is passionate about the help it provides to our service men and women.
This year, the Mayor has chosen Acacia Family Support as his charity during his term in office. Acacia Family Support located in Sutton Coldfield was founded in 2004 by two local mums who both experienced postnatal depression and were determined to help other families. The charity delivers a service from St John’s Church in Walmley to provide support to help new mothers and fathers recover from the symptoms associated with pre and postnatal depression and anxiety.
Tickets for the Mayor’s Charity Dinner are now on sale. The dinner is in support of Acacia Family Support and will be held on Friday 29th March 2019 at Ramada Birmingham, Penns Lane Sutton Coldfield. Tickets are priced at £37.50. The evening will include a three course meal and entertainment from live band The Forgery. Please contact Natalia on 0121 663 1765 if you would like to purchase a ticket.
